Phelim Hoey: 1

During in a lecture, I asked about my work and what photographer or artist could be linked to the project I am doing. One of the photographers that I got told about was Phelim Hoey. Phelim, who was born the Netherlands in 1984 is a photographer who studied at the School of Arts in Utrecht, Netherlands. In the early days of his studies, Phelim was struggling with problems with his eye, it was later revealed he was in the early stages of MS (multiple sclerosis) which is a neurological disorder. His photography practice went in a another direction when finding out he had this condition; he used his photography in a way of finding healing and a positive creative way of studying his condition and looking into his ever changing relationship with his body.

Phelim uses a wide range of media, from photography, film and sculpture installations. Phelim relates the way he works as a conceptual storytelling through his use of fragile materials or delicate still-lives, where he depicts his precariously-balanced objects. In his images Phelim shows vulnerability and tension. He also uses medical documents, sketches and images which link to his condition, this show a personal touch to his photography.
