Phelim Hoey: 2

When searching Phelim Hoey, I came across a project called La Machine, while looking at his work, I really like how he uses different objects to show the impact his MS has on his life. He uses casted arms in the images that represent his arms, feeling separate form his body, he also uses different products linked to mobility such as wheelchairs, walking sticks, walkers etc. this brings across the fact his project is centred around disability, but he uses them in a way that is unconventional by making models out of them. Whilst looking for photographers who are linked to my work, I felt Phelim’s work is different to what I am doing but the way he looks at disability is interesting and something I would want to bring into my own work in the future.

Phelim work looks at the way autonomy and independence are considered to be important in today’s society and bring his own disability to the forefront and braking the stigma that having a disability makes you less of a person in today society, instead you have to find a different way around things. This is where my project links to his work in the way we want disability to be normalised and not stigmatised. This is what I take away from his project, not only looking at it for my university work, but looking at it in a personal way that links to my disability and struggles.
