Guest Lecture Charlotte Jansen

Charlotte Jansen is an art and culture journalist, Charlotte wrote a book called Girl on Girl, which was centred around art and photography of the female gaze. So one of the question that was raised during in this talk was what is the female gaze ?, Charlotte explained that the female gaze is images that our shown of girls/women in everyday life and those that can be classes as explicit images. Throughout our lifetime women have been seen differently to men by the women’s body being sexualised, this has not helped by the tabloids ie. page 3 models in newspapers and until recently these where still allowed. Charlotte mentions that one of the things that annoys her is the way women are portrayed as a beauty icon and sexualised and that in todays time sizes of clothing for females only go up to a size 12 but is this making people of a bigger size feel bad? and leading to causes around body issues?.

Throughout time they as always been the illusion that women should be in the kitchen, a stay at home mother, doing the ironing and making sure everything is done by the time the man gets home from work. This dose not leave much options for women when it comes to working, women working has not been accepted for many years but over the past decade women have fought back against this and are proving that women do not have to be stuck at home and you can have kids and still work.
