Guest lecture Carlotta Cardana: 3
In 2015, Carlotta was tired of London and needed a break, she decided to go to Japan and stayed with a friend. She originally went there to start work and photograph the Olympics and carry out a project that she pitched to Bloomberg about how the medals given at the Olympics were made from recycled electronics; Bloomberg supported her with this project. Carlotta’s friend got her into places around Japan and translate for her, Carlotta mentioned that when she got Bloomberg onboard, she signed a deal to say that they had exclusivity for 3 months before she could sell or showcase the images. As well as working on the Olympics project, Carlotta also work on other project called ‘Kabukicho Nights’, which was about women going into clubs to meet young men. Carlotta took images of the men because she found them interesting by the way they dressed and the plastic surgery they had undergone to make them look cute or like famous pop stars at that time. Carlotta said she took photographs of the same men a few times and they were unrecognisable, as they had completely changed their face, she would go in looking for certain man and would not be able to tell if it was the same person she took an image of before. This was the men’s lifestyle and had to keep up with the trends to stay popular, as well as looking like pop stars, they would also use plastic surgery to change their facial features such as their eyelid., They would get rid of something they called ‘almond eye’ and change it to a more ‘western fold’ and have tear bags injections which would give the cute look they were going for.
