KH and how she changed my families lives

KH came into our family lives at the age two and a half, while my parents had been foster carers for few years at this point we had never taken someone that had a disability, we had never really thought about taking someone in with a disability let alone someone with a condition as severe as KH’s. My parents had always said no to kids with a severe disability, like many people would, because they did not think they would be able to manage, and possibly a little bit frightened by the thought. My parents were approached by a social worker about two placements, one being a baby and the other being KH, my parents had said no to KH after they had talked about which placement to take. After a couple of days we were told that the baby would not be coming due to the fact they did not get the care order. Whilst my mum was at the contact centre with another child we were looking after for a short time, she had seen KH at the contact centre with her mum and fallen in love with her, my mum came home and told my dad to phone the social worker to say that we would take her. This was the best decision we had ever made, KH is now 19 years old an important part of our lives, she is the sister I always wanted and could not imagine her not being here living with us. KH might not biologically be my sister but she will always be my sister in my eyes.
