Creative Studio, blog 3: Week 3 - Group Crit and Preparation

During this session, our core tutor, Dale Holmes, placed us into our groups where we presented our previous work and ideas for the future. As I am following on from my BA (Hons), I showed my previous work 'Katie’ and the ideas on how to move this project forward for my Masters. I am passionate about this project, it is personal to me as it is centred around my sister who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy. I wanted to show that having a disability does not hinder you from living life to the fullest and highlighting disability in a positive light. I did not want the audience looking at my images to feel sorry for for my sister.

After showing my work via a presentation, Dale and my fellow students gave feedback, which was:

  • To keep on the same track I had previously done and continue this in my future work.

  • Keep developing work.

  • Look at different art forms.

  • Look into disability as a whole.

  • Sensory - plays a big part in this project

  • Family

  • Relationship

  • Personal

After this session, I looked more in-depth into the subject of disability, even though I knew a lot about Cerebral Palsy from living with my sister who has had it from a young age. I am looking more into disability as a whole and how it can impact in daily life for different people and did not want this to come across in a negative way. As well as looking at the disability side of things, I wanted to look at what I could use to make the project have its own unique aspect by looking at different sensory material I could work with photographically, whilst on track in making my final finished project, which is a book. I know the final deadline is in the horizon, but wanted to consider different material options to print on by using the printing lab on site.

I went into to the printing studio at the University and looked at the different materials I could use to print on and asked a members of staff in the print lab about the process of printing on different materials. I would print on these different materials to see outcome of the image(s)
