Creative studio, blog 8: Experimentation, part 1
As well as continuing this project and taking it into the outdoor environment I still wanted to look into the sensory aspect of the project and how I could move this forward. In the first two images below I have used bubble wrap as this has a sensory touch but used this in a way to cover Katie’s identity you can still see her behind but gives her more of a blurry effect. The next two images have more sensory in the brightness of the glow sticks, Katie loves objects that light up and is something she likes to interact with; the last image is of the glow sticks and shaving foam I wanted to create layers and space between the glows sticks so show how they are many different layers in life.
Experimenting with different art forms is something I would want to do and see how it works out, you learn through the process that you try and experiment with not everything will work out but if you have to learn to fall to find the end result that does work. Phelim Hoey is a Dutch photographer that uses his own health issue with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in his photography project La Machine, La Machine looks at the struggles Hoey body face through his MS, it looks at how is body parts struggle by showing broken parts of the body and movement, he does this by using casting of his hands and making walking sticks into sculptures.
I want to Look into doing more casting of hands and feet but also looking at how to cast medical equipment Katie needs. This is something I want to try and do to add another level to my project. I also want to look at movement by using lights to represent this.
From my past work I have used sensory items as this is a big part of Katie’s life and communication with us as a family and I want to be able to explore this further and further through out the rest of my project. While looking at the sensory aspect of the project. It is good to go back to the basic and look at why sensory is important. Sensory play is important as it encourages learning through been able to explore, use problem solving and creativity, it can also be used as a calming staggery for people that suffer with behavioural issue or are noise sensitive. For Katie it is about been able to touch things with texture as she finds it nice and calming and finds watching lights relaxing, sensory play is very stimulating and used as tool in school for kids that help them get through the school day or in day care centres. Katie has used sensory items through her whole life and is still very important to this day, it helps her relax and can also help her communicate.
I want to be able to work with different materials to see what effects they bring in a photographic way and see how different materials bring a different effect into the camera. The texture of the materials used and how they come across in the project is important because of the way someone can react with that said image, I also wanted to look at the type of paper I could use for this project.
