TMA1402: Creative Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Blog 2 Simon Poulter talk, part 2
26/01/22 Blog 2: Part 2:
The next part of the session Simon went on to talk about our creative progress and the importance of the creative road map.
Notes
Creative Road Map - need to be reflective
Set achievable goals, that you can stage to progress, they need to be achievable goals not unrealistic.
You need to see your work moving along and reaching the goals you have set for yourself.
Show your work to people through your progressing journey not just when the project is finished. This helps to get feedback, to see what works and does not work, this helps with your progress.
Listen, good listeners show great leadership. Creative people know how to listen, listening is foundational.
Failure is the way to success “No, is the first point to ‘Yes’”
If your always told yes you do not improve on your work along the way.
Create a portfolio of skills, needs to be able to show your work across different platforms e.g. website, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook etc.
You are as good as your last gig, word of month is always good to get your next job.
Creative people are taciturn, “if you say ‘pink’, they will say, what about blue ?” This makes you think about blue or why your are using pink, it gives you a different prospective.
Work with analogue and digital, as both are important as each other.
Set a day rate, do not be afraid to talk about money. Simon says he finds British people do not like talking about money, as Americans do not have an issue with talking about it.
‘Push through’ Creative people get depressed and lost with their work, you have to fail at things to be able to get to your final piece of work.
Do not be afraid to ask for help.
Do not let the side hustle take over, this means that if you have a job outside of your desired job area, do not get stuck in this job and let go of your dreams, make the leap to follow them.
Recognise the time you are best at doing your work e.g. morning, afternoon, evening…..
If you know you know your work flow pattern, you can then be more efficient.
Support strategies - geographical or online I.e friends, family, peers etc.
If you have come over from another country, connect with others who are in the same situation as you through University resources.
(Quantum theory) Look outside of your specialist area, this gives you a different prospective on other areas and the possibility of integrating the different areas of study into your own work.
If you get rejected/ turned down from a job, make sure to ask why? Them giving you feedback could help you along the way on to your next job opportunities.
Show you can work on your own and in a group.
Build a portfolio over time, build through reputation, this can take time to Establish
Understand new forms of selling (shopify - social media platforms such as Instagram & Facebook or through your own websites or other selling platforms )
This module will help you along the journey of eventually setting up your own business, if this is what you plan to. This is by setting up at start up business in a group of students from different art forms and working together to make a business plan.
Identify people that can help you reach your dream.
Make a business plan.
Successful people have a road map
Look at competitions that you can enter, this will help you to get your name out there and learn the competition progress.
Take up smaller opportunities that help your growth and understanding.
Smaller opportunities can help you become successful.
During your MA you have to be self directed, motivated and using your MA as a stepping stone to your practice.
This module will become much clearer over the weeks.
I found this talk really interesting and made me look at this module and work in a different prospective. Doing the creative mind map helped me look at what I wanted to do in the future and how I can make start on doing this to help me along my career journey.
